I'm going to say this several times here, but it is almost never a wise move to buy a used musical instrument online. I can't state it any plainer than that.
There are several reasons why it is not a good idea to buy used musical instruments online, not the least of which is the fact that you have no idea of what you are actually getting. Buying online puts you at risk of getting a substandard instrument.
If you are considering purchasing a musical instrument of any kind you have several options for purchasing. If you are on a budget, you are probably seriously considering buying a used musical instrument. There is actually nothing at all wrong with buying a used instrument, in fact, for a beginner it is probably a very good idea since you don't know if they are going to even like the instrument in the long run. However, it is never a good idea to buy a used instrument online. You should be aware of several factors before hitting the internet for that instrument.
There are in fact, several reasons why it is never a good idea to buy used musical instruments online. The first of which is that the person who is going to be playing an instrument really should try out several different varieties of the same instrument before buying a particular model or brand. If you are buying site unseen, you have no idea how that particular musical instrument is actually going to sound when you or your child plays it.
The second reason, there are sellers online who are slightly less than scrupulous and are perfectly willing to sell a damaged musical instrument to people who know little about the instrument in hopes that the buyer will assume responsibility for the damage rather than hold the seller responsible.
If you do choose to buy your used musical instrument online, make sure the seller is willing to repair any damages to the instrument, or guarantees it's condition. Check the seller's reputation and run a search to see what other's have to say. It's still not nearly enough to be sure you are getting what you pay for, but it's better than nothing.
The third reason it isn't a good idea to buy a musical instrument online is that it you really have no idea exactly what you are getting. You aren't able to hold the instrument in your hand and visually inspect it before you buy it. Purchasing online holds some degree of risk, with a used musical instrument, that risk is magnified: the ultimate case of "buyer beware".
The final reason you shouldn't buy a musical instrument online is that it is sometimes difficult to tell where a buyer is selling from and if the buyer is accountable to U. S. laws. This means you may not be able to hold them accountable for injuries their instruments caused.
Regardless of the fact that I think it is vitally important to try your instrument before you buy, I also think that buying a used musical instrument online is assuming a serious risk that isn't necessary. Talking to the local high school band director can provide some great information about the best retailers in the area for used instruments. It is definitely worth checking out.
It is important to try any musical instrument before you buy it used or not, buying a used instrument online is not a good idea because you have no way of actually trying your instrument before you buy it. Without trying your instrument you have no idea what you're getting.
That's not so say that buying a new musical instrument on line is a bad idea. In fact, I highly recommend it. You can get some great prices that way. But again, make your way to your local music store to try things out first.
